Report
The 4 days workshop began at 9 AM on 12-10-07 at R and D centre of Prof SN
Tripathi Memorial Foundation. Prof. S.S. Kushwaha, Ph.D. Physics and Vice Chancellor,
M.G. Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, was the chief guest and inaugurated the workshop.
In his inaugural address he addressed the periodical need of such workshops,
where students can learn practical aspect of these advance techniques. Prof.
Kushwaha was concerned to the substandard training programme of B.Sc. & B-Tech
students of Biotechnology in various colleges of UTTAR Pradesh. He verged the
GOI to support such training programmes from the Feedback Proforma, a conclusion
was drawn that this training was highly beneficial to all the participants.
Prof. M.S. Kanungo, FNA, Professor Emeritus, Department of Zoology, BHU delivered
the keynote address “Molecular Biology : History and Now” In his
oration he mentioned that University possess knowledge where as Industries
possesses infrastructure. Therefore the hybridization under such organization
like Prof. S.N. Tripathi Memorial Foundation be of great notification interest.
Prof Yamini Bhusan Tripathi, the President of the Foundation, while giving
his Presidential address, narrated the objective of the workshop. He said very
clearly that there are several colleges inn UP, which are imparting the degree
in M. Sc. and B.Sc. of Biotechnology to the students, but these students do
not exposed to the real experimental technique for several advance experiments,
which is already in their courses. He said hat by such workshops, the Foundation
will try to expose these students with newer advance technologies.
For all four days, the participants were engaged from 9 AM to 6 PM, which
covered 2 lectures and whole day practical classes. 17 students participated
in the workshop. Out of them 7 were Ph.D. students, 2 were M.Sc. students and
remaining 8 students were B.Sc. students of Biotechnology.
They learnt different technique like microphage culture, isolation of DNA,
antioxidant assay, tissue culture method, bacterial culture etc. Many experienced
teachers namely Prof. Ramesh Chandra, Mycology and Plant pathology, Institute
of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; Dr. Gopal Nath;
Prof. Yamini B. Tripathi; Dr. K.M. Tiwari; Prof. B.D. Tripathi and Dr. Vachaspati
had giving lectures and trained students that how to performed experiments.
All the participants got a chance to perform Polyaccrylamide gel electrophoresis
(PAGE) and Agrose gel electrophoresis, gel casting, running and staining. They
did enzyme kinetics for super oxide dismutase (SOD). They learnt the techniques
of Hematology, Bleeding the rats, Microbial assay and plant tissue culture.
There was one session dedicated to phyto-chemical techniques, which covered & soxhlet
extraction, column chromatography, thin layer chromatography, melting point
determination etc.
In plant tissue culture experiment, they learnt the several techniques such
as sterilization & preparation of media, explants preparation for culturing
the plants, standard conditions of plant tissue culture room. They were also
exposed to the conditions of eukariotic cell culture, taking rat peritoneal
macrophages as example. The techniques related to cell viability assay, plating
and culturing were shown. They got the chance to handle the equipments related
to culture of cells. The techniques related to animal handling, hygienic conditions
of animal house, ethical issues related to animal experiments were discussed
at great length.
On 4th day the participants were taken to a company Surya Pharamaceuticals,
where they stayed for 4 hours and observed the process of herbal drug manufacturing,
starting from identification of herbs, their extraction, powdering tablet
making, strip backing capsule filling etc.
All the participants filled a From the Feedback Proforma. From that it was
found that students were very much satisfied with the standard of lectures.
They were very eager to learn newer techniques of Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
